Garry Parker rolled back the years to fire Kidlington to the Umbro Veterans over 35 title at his old stomping ground.

Parker slotted an 88th-minute penalty to defeat Ilkeston Town 1-0 at Nottingham Forest's City Ground - where he played between 1988 and 1991.

It proved a dream day for Kidlington, who also included former Oxford defenders Andy Melville and Anton Rogan as they became the first Oxfordshire side to win the trophy.

Captain Steve Jenkins, who was also on the U's books as a youngster, said: "We played brilliantly and the pitch was immaculate it was voted the second best in the league.

"We won about ten games to get there and really deserved it. The game was going to go straight to penalties, with no extra time.

"It was rolling subs so in the last few minutes we were saying put someone on who wants to take a penalty.

"Then Garry scored so we didn't have to. When we went into the bar afterwards, there was a picture of Garry celebrating with the League Cup (that he won with Forest), so it was appropriate that he scored."

Jenkins, who also played for a number of non-league clubs, including Banbury United and Oxford City, added: "A year ago Andy Melville was playing for Nottingham Forest as he was on loan there. Their staff still knew him. The game after us was the over 40s and had Chris Waddle and John Dreyer (ex-United defender) in it."

Player-manager Paul Creed said: "It's a great achievement for us to have won a national final having also won three Oxford vets competitions as well."
