Oxford City and Radley both got off to inauspicious starts in the Southern League first round at Horspath Road.
The joint-hosts of Saturday's Division 3 West meeting, both finished last in their respective groups.
However, there were more than enough promising individual performances which augur well for the rest of the season.
Both teams were hit by a lack of availability, and were unable to compete in all the events.
There was further misfortune for City when Sam Moss picked up a slight injury after his victory in the 100m, leaving him to run in pain in both the 400m and 200m.
Notable performances came from Joseph Allison, as he narrowly missed out on a win in the 100m to a much older and more powerful athlete.
Allison went on to win his 200m by some margin, proving that he has real potential.
Another new face, John Lisiewicz, ran a well-controlled 5,000m to haul in the opposition and leapfrog into second place in the dying seconds.
Another new face to the team, although not new to the club, was Gareth Davies, who showed his talent in the triple jump with a huge leap of 13.07m.
Result: 1 Haslemere 124pts, 2 Chichester 119, 3 Wimborne & Poole 117, 4 Oxford City 106.

As with City, there were plenty of positives with five personal bests and five club records being set.
Danny Griffiths led the way with a club record in the 5,000m, finishing second in 15mins 48.5secs, while debutants Sam Miller and Arran Evans both clocked personal bests in the A and B string 800m.
Rhys Glastonbury, also making his Southern League debut, finished a creditable second in the 1,500m in 4.28.0.
Further personal bests came from Matt Pearce, who jumped 7.94m in the triple jump, while Jim House shone in the discus and shot.
He threw a personal best of 28.23m in the discus, before setting a club record in the shot with a superb throw of 11.98m.
Captain Chris Franks was another to set a club best, throwing 37.62m in the hammer and 10.57m in the shot.
The throwing section of the team performed admirably, collecting 39 points out of the 40 possible.
