Tom Nugent was the last-gasp hero for Oxfordshire under 13s as his six off the final ball secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over West Oxfordshire as they got their 2006 campaign off to a flying start at Charlbury.
Needing five runs to win off the final ball, Nugent smashed it into the adjoining field to win the match.
Oxon won the toss and elected to field, but West Oxon's opening pair compiled a steady 45, before Will Oglesby made a breakthrough.
Despite the solid start, the top order never managed to get the upper hand, although George Sandbach (17), Will Watts (15) and Adam Wallington (18no) made useful contributions in their total of 124-4.
With conditions improving, Oxon's under 12s got off to a flier, and by the first drinks break, had reached 74 without lost, Lloyd Sabin retiring on 34.
However, west Oxon hauled themselves back into the game with Jack Simpson, Watts and Sandbach all taking wickets.
It came down to a nailbiting final over, and with one ball left, it looked as though the district side had pulled off a remarkable victory.
But Nugent had other ideas as his fantastic final shot sailed over the ropes.
