A record-breaking run by Witney Roadrunner Mathew Ashton gave his club victory in the Oxfordshire Road Relays at Hook Norton.

Running the anchor leg over the 3.25-mile course in Sunday's senior men's race, Ashton clocked 15mins 42secs to see his club to victory by just under a minute from west Oxfordshire rivals Woodstock Harriers.

Witney recorded a cumulative time of 1hr 48mins 58secs.

Banbury Harriers took the early initiative on leg one, but, from the second onwards, Woodstock took control.

At the start of the final leg, Woodstock's Marcus Maxwell had a lead of more than a minute.

But Ashton's superb run overhauled his rival, before he blitzed away to win in a course record time.

Woodstock held on comfortably for the silver medal, with Abingdon Amblers securing the bronze in 1.51.45.

In the veteran men's race, Oxford City took the spoils in convincing fashion.

They were led off by Roy Treadwell, who clocked 19.36 on the first stage, while Trevor Dixon recorded the fastest time for City on the third, finishing in 18.12.

City won in 2.00.16 with their nearest rivals more than five minutes adrift.

Banbury Harriers finished second in 2.05.50, with Witney Roadrunners taking bronze in 2.09.04.

Witney's senior ladies completed a double as they took the title in a combined time of 1.01.27.

They dominated from the start, taking a first-leg lead through Nicola Gomm (21.03).

Sally Pitts (21.58) consolidated this lead on leg two, before elite runner Nikki Slater clocked the fastest time of the day (18.26) to secure victory on the anchor.

Witney comfortably held off the challenge of Alchester's team of Jenny McBain, Rachael Elliott and Tina Chris- tie.

In the under 15 boys' race, Banbury Harriers were victorious, but had to hold off a strong challenge from Witney.

Their final winning margin was 25 seconds, thanks in no small part to an excellent opening leg by Jacob Simmons (5.36).

Oliver Simmons (6.28) and Scott Morgan (6.45) made up the trio.

In the under 13 girls' race, Abingdon Amblers reigned supreme, while Banbury Harriers completed a one-two in the under 15 girls' race.
