Banbury were unable to hold third-placed King's Lynn who returned to form with a 2-0 win in Saturday's Southern League Premier Division contest.
Wayne Blossom had an early chance for the visitors, following good work by John Hicks, but it was the hosts who took the lead after 20 minutes.
Banbury keeper Alan Foster did well to deny Jack Defty from close range, but was helpless as Defty acrobatically turned in the resulting Adam Smith corner.
The dangerous Blossom was inches away from equalising following Andy Baird's centre, as the Puritans looked to respond.
But it was King's Lynn who had the better chances as Matt O'Halloran went close, while defender Dean West fired just wide from a narrow angle.
Lynn began the second half strongly, with Matt Nolan and Defty going close.
O'Halloran's dipping volley was inches wide as the home side sought their second goal.
West should have scored on the hour, but his effort was cleared by the alert Tommy Kinch.
The goal finally came in the 76th minute. Cedric Anselinn played the ball into to Defty, who finished deftly.
Banbury subs Matty Gooderick and George Redknap missed half-chances, but the visitors never looked like getting back into the game.
They will be looking for better luck today at home to mid-table side Rugby Town.
