Didcot Town claimed the GLS Football Hellenic League Premier Division title for the first time for 52 years with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Bishops Cleeve on Saturday.

Some excellent defending by Didcot, with centre back Danny Campbell in outstanding form, and a goal of real quality from Stuart Beavon gave Town the point they needed to be crowned champ- ions.

Now Stuart Peace's side, who are set to receive the trophy after today's game against Abingdon United at the npower Loop Meadow Stadium, can look forward to playing in the Southern League next season.

Beavon fired Didcot ahead in the 10th minute.

Keeper Chris Webb claimed the ball under pressure from a corner, and he swiftly released it to Beavon inside the Cleeve half.

Despite being closely marked, Beavon turned Mike Rhodes and hit a stunning 25-yard shot which went low into the far corner of the net past keeper Dan Logan.

Cleeve came back strongly, and Richard Mansell fired a shot inches wide before Andy Tucker's drive hit a post.

Didcot went close to grabbing a second before the break when Jack King's shot from 30 yards whistled just over the bar.

Matt Collins wasted a great chance to equalise early in the second half, blasting over the bar after Didcot keeper Chris Webb had blocked his first effort.

A curling shot from Paul Powell grazed a Cleeve post, but with five minutes remaining Cleeve equalised when Tucker's right-wing cross was only half-cleared by Grant Goodall and Rhodes's deflected shot went underneath Webb.

But Didcot saw out the closing minutes with little problem to spark title celebrations for their 200-strong travelling support.
