JAMES Hewitt said going the extra mile was worth it after starring in Chinnor's championship-deciding victory over Maidenhead.

Since Christmas, the full back has been travelling back from Leeds Metropolitan University to play for Chinnor each week and has proved a key man in their title run-in.

Hewitt, 20, was in great kicking form against Maidenhead and having joined the club as a youngster, promotion to National 3 is particularly sweet for him.

He said: "I've been coming back on Thursday evening or Friday, but it is a lot easier to drive 200 miles when you are winning every week.

"I really enjoyed it when I came back. John Brodley approached me and said he would like to have me playing every week.

"After a game like that, it has all proved worth it."

Hewitt added: "I've played here since I was four and I've never been in a Chinnor side where the confidence is so high.

"We have had games where we have gone down and it looks as though it is almost a lost cause, but we have always thought we can get ourselves back into this.

"There is a great belief and confidence among the players. When it matters, we can pull it out of the fire.

"In previous seasons we've not won the tight games, but this season we have had that little bit extra."

In Hewitt and Richard Williams, Chinnor have had two reliable place-kickers and that has often been vital.

Hewitt said: "Kicking is a pretty big part of the game, especially as our league has been so tight.

"I put a lot of practice in during the week before and it all paid off."

Hewitt, who has suffered from a hamstring injury recently, added: "I've also spent a lot of time on the treatment table and I can tell you we've got a great physio team.

"They work incredibly hard to get us out there on a Saturday.

"The preparation for games has been superb in general."
