Dave Stemp caught a magnificent 9.25lb brown trout while taking part in the annual pike fishing sessions at Farmoor Fly Fishing Club's Darlow Water, near Hardwick.
The trout, one of two weighing 9.25lb which he caught, took a legered deadbait. It was returned unharmed to the lake.
Darlow bailiff John Stanley said: "With the introduction of boats this year for the first time, and the prospect of hooking one of these superb trout, members are looking forward to the new season."
The pike fishing sessions this year were badly affected by the cold weather and only two fish, up to 15lb, were caught. Last year a number of pike up to 25lb were taken.
