Striker Matt Green says there’s one very good reason Oxford United know they can win at Stevenage on Tuesday night – because they’ve got James Constable, and he’s back looking the business.

United’s top scorer hit his 19th goal of the season, and then made the injury-time winner for Green, against Gateshead at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

‘Beano’, as Constable is known, has fully recovered from an injury to his left ankle, and is again looking sharp in front of goal.

Green said: “Beano’s got his fitness back again now, he’s got his self-belief again, and it showed on Saturday.

“He set one up and scored one. I take credit for my goal, but it was a great header back from him and I didn’t really have a lot to do.

“We’ve played well as a team, but sometimes individuals can make something happen for us and it’s nice to have that.”

United will also have the backing of some of the most vocal and passionate fans in the Blue Square Premier.

“The fans are our 12th man,” Green said. “They’re a big, big reason why I wanted to come back here, they’re a crowd that gets behind you and they’re the best in the league.

“It’s just nice to have their support and hopefully they can make good things happen.”

Stevenage believe they have the best team in the division, but so do Oxford and Luton, which makes it such an intriguing title race.

One spectre Stevenage have to deal with is the knowledge that previously they’ve fallen away when so many have fancied them for promotion.

Said Green: “Every time they have gone top of the league, they haven’t stayed up there. But we’ve got a job to do, we aren’t thinking about them so much. They haven’t got the players we’ve got, I think.”
