GREAT & Little Tew chairman Dave Freeman has expressed mixed feelings about the turn of events which has seen his club unexpectedly promoted to Division 1 of the MP Sports Cherwell League.
Tew, having finished third in Division 2 last season, were handed a place in the top flight on Tuesday by the league after Bicester & North Oxford pulled out their first team. And Freeman said: “I would say I have mixed feelings.
“I am disappointed for Bicester that they felt they had to do that, but obviously pleased for ourselves.
“The objective for us this season was to get promotion to the top division, and it has happened sooner than anticipated.”
At the same time, Freeman is convinced that Tew, who have been joined by Mark Fitzsimons, who was chairman at Bicester last year and Ian Bryan, a former Bicester captain, will be strong enough to hold their own in the top flight.
“We are geared up whether it is Division 1 or 2 – there is no difference,” he added.
Tew, who will again be led by Anthony Smith, have also signed up Harry Smith, from Horley, last season’s leading runscorer for Oxfordshire Under 17s.
