Banbury picked up only one point from their South League Premier Division 1 double-header over the weekend and are still in danger of the drop.
They drew 1-1 against top of the table Wimbledon on Saturday, but then lost 2-1 to fellow strugglers Oxford University the next day.
It was a solid performance against Wimbledon, Banbury taking an early lead through Adrian Simons.
Sound defending from Tom Slay and Charlie Murphy kept the visitors at bay until five minutes before half-time when the league’s top scorer Simon Lanyon converted a rebound from a short corner.
Banbury might have pinched all three points when Richard Foreman’s snatch shot hit the keeper on the head and went over the crossbar.
Star man Adrian Simons was unavailable against the Dark Blues, but Banbury still created numerous chances and should have gone ahead early on.
However, it was the students who drew first blood with a goal from Richard Bond, and they made it 2-0 through Alex Evans in the second half.
Banbury threw everything towards the University goal and their pressure was rewarded with a Simon Boardman deflection to pull one back.
With time running out, Banbury forced a late short corner, but Tyson Nunneley’s effort was well saved. Oxford Hawks maintained their unbeaten second half of the season, but had to be content with a frustrating 1-1 against Milton Keynes at Banbury Road North.
Milton Keynes played with 11 men behind the ball and looked to counter attack. Hawks were solid at the back throughout and made only one mistake, which the visitors capitalised on to score.
Playing some good passing hockey, Hawks eventually levelled through Jono Holt from a short corner.
Hawks pressed hard to find the winner, but to no avail.
Rover Oxford 2nd had a double-header in Regional Division 2, losing 5-1 against Tring and 3-2 to Bracknell.
Tring led 2-1 at the interval, Tom Browhill’s short-corner strike keeping Rover in touch, but in the second half, Tring’s greater experience showed.
Bracknell opened the scoring on Sunday, but Rover levelled via a deflection from Ben White.
Rover’s Shahil Ramdin hit a post before a clumsy defensive tackle led to a penalty stroke converted by Bracknell.
Brownhill’s short-corner strike made it 2-2, but in the dying minutes, Bracknell sneaked the winner.
