IT will be another 11 weeks before we can get back onto our rivers, but at least the last weekend of the season offered some respite from a dismal winter.
For the first time in weeks we had a couple of days when the winds abated and even the sun shone fleetingly.
For those who seized the opportunity, the Thames looked in good nick, albeit cold, and I heard of two nice chub of 4lb and 5lb caught by a couple of anglers at Carrot’s Ham.
Still on the subject of rivers, thanks to all the match secretaries who I contact every Sunday or who email me their results.
Match fishing has always been an integral part of our coverage and it’s good to keep up the tradition.
While the traditionalists will have put their fishing tackle away and got the paintbrush out, there are still loads of waters which can be fished during the close season.
The Oxford Canal running through Oxford, Wolvercote and Kidlington is still open for business, as are the commercial fisheries around the county.
These cater for everyone, some produce huge carp while others hold the smaller fish that most of us are more used to.
There is also fly fishing at Farmoor, which I have taken up. I have to admit I’m not very good at it, but practice makes perfect.
So if you’re not re-decorating the house, get out and have a go at something different!
