The third and final leg of Sutton Courtenay’s Markertow Shield was fished by six on the Culham Cut, as the Thames at Appleford was still hammering through.
Despite that, the river produced three quality perch for winner Steve Wheatley, the best going 3.7.0, for a winning 7.9.0. He fed chopped worm and then placed a whole worm on a size 18 over the top for victory which also clinched him the shield over three legs.
In second place with 4.8.0 of perch was Bob Gosbee, who also fished worm over chop, while Gary Stafford finished third with 2.4.0, comprising two chub on worm.
At long last, Cuddesdon Mill VAA were able to get back on the Thame to fish their Fred Cooper Last Chance Cup, which was switched from Cuddesdon to Chistlehampton.
The river was back within its banks, but still pushing through and conditions were tough for the nine anglers.
Bryan Ball was the only angler to catch, putting two chub on the scales for a top weight of 8.4.0. He fed mashed bread and then fished a straight lead with flake.
There was a very good turnout of 13 for the Kidlington AS Mac McGregor Cup fished on the Oxford Canal from Wolvercote Green to the allotments.
The water looked in good nick, but a hard frost had made a big difference.
Pegged opposite the allotments, Alan Middleton gradually put together a winning weight of 3.8.0. He fed joker and fished bloodworm over the top, landing a couple of perch for 2lb and making up the rest of his weight with 51 tiny roach.
Andy Benwell took second place with a net of small roach and skimmers for 2.15.0 on punch, while Dave Britnell had to settle for third spot with 2.10.0. He started off on punch, catching roach, then switched to worm to tempt some perch.
Points after 18 matches: J Bean 120, H Clarke & A Middleton 112, P Jackman 83.
There were a few boats moving around on the canal at King’s Bridge for the North Oxford match and it was bitterly cold for the seven members who turned out.
Sat by the bungalow, Alan Bateman was a clear winner with a perch of 1lb, plus 80 tiny fish worth 2.14.0. All his fish came to bloodworm over joker.
Maurice Winstone also fished bloodworm to finish second with 0.2.0, just ahead of Roger Bateman with 0.1.0. Both used bloodworm over joker and both caught tiny fish.
