TWO Oxfordshire clubs have been helping Ox-ford University’s players prepare for their Varsity Match against Cambridge at Porthcawl.

Last Sunday, Frilford Heath faced the students in a match on their Red Course, triumphing 6½-3½.

This Saturday, the Dark Blues will take on a BB&O Elite Boys team at Witney Lakes.

A heavy frost at Frilford meant that the morning foursomes had to be cancelled.

BB&O Junior Order of Merit champion Joe Richardson set the tone in the singles with an impressive 6&5 victory over Oxford captain Oliver Steph-en.

Fellow BB&O junior Dean Newbold claimed a half in the second match.

Frilford veterans Jimmy Wilson and Derek Walton followed with comfortable wins over Calum Slowther and Ben Twiney.

Alex Gavrilovic, Paul Dolton and Simon Alcock, on his return to the Frilford team, completed the victory.

Saturday’s match pairs two sides who are coached by former English amateur champion John Cook, who runs his golf school at Witney Lakes.

“It will be a real test for both sides and the timing is perfect,” said Cook.

“This will be the university’s last game before they meet Cambridge, while for the Elite Boys it heralds the start of the BB&O season.

“I am especially interested on how the students fare against the finest young players in the three counties.”

Cook, who is head coach for the BB&O, added: “I suppose as I coach both sides I am the winner – but then again I could also be the loser.”
