Didcot Tn 1 (Mortimer-Jones 63)

Farnborough 2 (King 53, McCollin 55)

Premier Division leaders Farnborough inflicted an eighth home defeat on Didcot on Saturday in the Zamaretto Southern league.

But there were enough good signs to suggest that the hosts may be able to pull clear of relegation trouble.

Boro, who were still smarting from a 4-0 loss at Hednesford only two days before, controlled the first half without scoring.

A brilliant saving tackle from Andy Williams denied former Didcot favourite Jack King a certain goal, Then a disputed free-kick on the edge of the Didcot box was struck sweetly by Daryl McMahon only for home keeper Matt Trott to make his first of a series of good saves.

Trott blocked bravely from Kezie Ibe on the half-hour mark as Didcot soaked up the pressure.

Farnborough received a huge slice of luck just two minutes after the break.

Philip John’s cross from the right struck the knee of Jamie Stevens and the ball thudded onto a post.

The rebound was then hooked onto the underside of the bar by Mark Draycott.

It proved to be a key moment because within minutes, the visitors had raced into an unassailable two-goal lead.

Didcot felt hard done-by when Ian Sampson was penalised on the left of the penalty box, and King flicked the resulting free-kick past Trott.

Moments later, the home side gifted possession to Andre McCollin just inside their half.

The Boro wide-man burst through to make it 2-0 after his initial shot had rebounded back to him off Trott’s right-hand post.

But Didcot are nothing if not resilient this season and soon had halved the arrears as James Mortimer-Jones crashed home a stunning volley from 18 yards.

This gave Didcot hope, but their best chancess were reduced to long-range efforts, while Farnborough could have added a third as King’s shot was deflected over the bar following some good work by Gary Holloway.

Then Ibe was denied by another fine challenge by Williams.
