Striker Franny Green says he’s relieved that Oxford United fans are now seeing just what he’s made of.
The 29-year-old forward, who joined from Kettering, has plenty of Football League experience behind him with Peterborough, Lincoln, Boston and Macclesfield.
But he felt he hadn’t really set the world alight in his first seven weeks at Oxford until a fine performance and spectacular opening goal in United’s 3-1 FA Trophy win at Chelmsford.
So perhaps now the tide has turned and he can become the valuable competition to main strikers, James Constable, Jack Midson and Matt Green, that manager Chris Wilder had hoped he would be.
“The first couple of games after I came in, I settled in very quickly and it was great for me,” Franny said.
“I just carried on with what I nornally do.
“And then we had the snow break. On a personal level, the couple of games after that I wasn’t quite with it, for whatever reason, and I’d be the first to admit that.
“Sometimes it happens. I’ve played long enough to know sometimes you have bad spells, sometimes you have great spells, and if you work hard it tends to come back. I’ve got my head down and worked hard, and it paid off last week.”
It was his two goals in the recent Oxfordshire Senior Cup tie at Kidlington which greatly boosted Green’s self-belief, as he acknowledged.
“Whatever level, hitting the back of the net gets your confidence up, and it definitely helped me.”
The odds are still on Wilder bringing back 19-goal top scorer Constable for the Blue Square Premier game against Kidderminster, which would probably mean Franny looking at a place on the bench, at best, again.
But he could still play a key part in United’s twin assault on the league and an FA Trophy final appearance.
“With the squad we’ve got, it has crossed my mind that we’ve got the chance of going to Wembley.
“But you’ve just got to take each game as it comes, and they come thick and fast now.
“Hopefully we’ll get there – it would be great for everyone.”
