Bill Simpson surpassed his own expectations when he drove in as Frilford Heath’s new men’s captain.
Simpson, who has been a Frilford member since 1991, had simply hoped to make contact with the ball in front of a 120-strong crowd.
But he was delighted with an impressive 255-yard effort, which held to the fairway on the first hole of the club’s Green Course.
Simpson, who plays in most of Frilford’s mixed events with his wife, Jennie, is also a country member of Burnham & Berrow in Somerset.
Having taken up golf aged 15 at Taunton & Pickeridge in Somerset, Simpson later trained as a chartered surveyor and started work in Oxford in 1972.
He now works from home specialising in development projects for housebuilders.
The day raised around £300 for Simpson’s chosen causes, Greatwood Caring for Retired Racehorses and a charity for children with special needs near Marlborough.
