Truro City 1 (Ash 90)
Banbury Utd 1 (Stone 44)
Banbury United were robbed of an unlikely Premier Division victory at Truro City by two very poor linesmen’s decisions in quick succession.
Billy Jeffrey’s young side – with eight teenagers in the 14-man squad – were leading 1-0 as the game moved into time added on.
Banbury’s Jason Taylor held the ball up by the corner flag, but to everyone’s amazement, the linesman on the opposite line signalled that the ball had gone out for a goal-kick.
And four minutes into injury time, from the resulting goal-kick, Jake Ash shot and although Joe Murrell saved the ball on the goal-line, the other linesman adjudged that the ball went over the line.
Banbury had taken the game to Truro in the first half.
Real chances were few and far between until the 44th minute when David Stone latched onto a pass up the right, following good work from Joe Coleman and debutant Luke Cray.
He outpaced his marker before shooting home from 15 yards.
Truro’s Andy Watkins rattled the crossbar with a shot early in the second half as the home side posted their intentions, but the Puritans defended brilliantly.
Truro substitute Scott Walker also hit the bar, before Banbury were denied at the death.
Banbury Utd: Murrell, Stanbridge, Martin, Cray, Learoyd, Redknap, Coleman, Benjamin (Shariff 73), Stone, Traylor, Ashton. Subs not used: Hilliard, Peppiatt
Attendance: 452.
