The nine-goal aggregate from the 5-0 and 4-0 wins over Grays this season, completed last Saturday, represents the biggest two-match aggregate in league fixtures against the same club since Oxford United’s final season in the Southern League, back in 1961-2.
In that season, as Arthur Turner’s side went on to win the championship and a place in the Football League through re-election, they managed a 14-goal margin (8-0 and 6-0 v Gravesend & Northfleet), and a nine-goal aggregate (6-0 and 4-1 v Bexley Heath).
There aren’t many times when a club beats the same side 5-0 and 4-0.
Oxford did manage 6-3 and 3-0 wins over Eastbourne last season. But back in 1995-6, for example, when the U’s beat Shrewsbury 6-0 at the Manor, that came after they had lost 2-0 at Gay Meadow.
