Opoortunity has knocked very early in 2010 for William Buick after he landed a dream job as stable jockey to top Newmarket trainer John Gosden.
The 21-year-old rider, who lives at Letcombe Regis, near Wantage, is continuing his meteoric rise by replacing Jimmy Fortune.
Speaking from Dubai, Buick, who only rode his first winner three years ago and was joint champion apprentice in 2008, said: “It’s a dream come true to ride for Mr Gosden.
“He has some great horses and I can't wait to get started.
“While I feel bad for Jimmy, it is the opportunity of a lifetime and it is up to me to take that opportunity and make the most of it.”
Having spent his career to date with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, Buick has been nominated as a future champion by many a shrewd judge.
He added: “The whole Balding family have been great to me over the years and I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for their support and encouragement.”
Meanwhile, Carruthers, the star of Mark Bradstock’s Letcombe Bassett stables, near Wantage, is set to sidestep a clash with Denman at Cheltenham on Saturday.
The seven-year-old, an impressive winner at Newbury last time out, is among 11 entries for the Argento Chase.
Henrietta Knight, whose West Lockinge yard, near Wantage, enjoyed a welcome winner with Ballymorn at Towcester on Sunday, hopes to run two of her stars, Somersby and Calgary Bay, this weekend.
Somersby holds entries in novice chases at Doncaster on Saturday and Hereford on Sunday.
Calgary Bay will attempt to defy the steadier of 11st 12lb in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster on Saturday.
“I think he can carry it, but I think there might be something else a bit nippier down the bottom with a low weight,” said Knight.
Alex Hales’s Edgcote stables, near Banbury, landed a 52-1 across-the-card double with Laughing Game at Market Rasen and Dinarius at Towcester.
Laughing Game (17-2) set the ball rolling by opening his account in a conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle under Sam Jones.
And Dinarius (9-2) made light of the heavy going to complete the double in a novices’ hurdle.
Paul Webber, who trains at Mollington, near Banbury, sprang a 33-1 shock when Llama Farmer triumphed at Haydock.
On the Flat, Kevin McAuliffe, who is based at Fernham, near Faringdon, landed a gamble when Mister Green scored at Lingfield, with the four-year-old backed down from 25-1 to 8-1 before taking a mile and a quarter handicap.
