Oxford United’s Blue Squ-are Premier game at home to Cambridge United has been rearranged for Tuesday, February 2, subject to neither side facing FA Trophy matches on that date.
The match, originally scheduled for November 28, was postponed then because of the FA Cup, and had been moved to next Tuesday, but has had to be called off again because Cambridge have an FA Trophy second-round replay at Eastbourne after they drew 2-2 this week.
Whether it can take place on February 2 is dependant on Oxford’s third-round tie at Chelmsford not going to a replay, and Cambridge not being involved in the competition then.
If Cambridge win at Eastbourne, they will be at home to either Salisbury or Histon that night.
The Salisbury-Histon second-round tie has been twice postponed and is now being played on January 30.
Because of the weather, and the way the Trophy takes precedence over league matches – wich is wrong, I believe – the fixtures are all over the place, which isn’t good for the fans.
The big problem with this competition, though, comes with the semi-finals which can be very disruptive to a club’s impetus in the league, as they are two-legged on successive Saturdays in the middle of March.
Oxford’s win over Woking this week means they visit Melbourne Stadium, Chelm-sford’s sports and athletics centre which was first opened in 2006, in the third round a week tomorrow.
And it causes another league game to bite the dust, with the home fixture against Wrexham having to be moved back to a date which has yet to be announced.
