Phil Taylor attracted a huge crowd as he officially opened the new Rileys Darts Zone in Cowley.

But the Power was stunned when Oxfordshire women’s player Deta Hedman stole the show with a 13-dart victory over the 15-time world champion.

Taylor, who is sponsored by Rileys, officially opened their 13th Darts Zone in the country before taking on eight lucky players in challenge matches.

And it was his final match that saw Hedman produce a stunning performance – hitting a 162 and 140 on her way to victory.

“It was brilliant,” she said afterwards.

“I have known Phil for a while now, but have never played him before so it was nice.

“Obviously to get a 13-darter was just fabulous.”

First-up against Taylor was Daniel Jones – the winner of the Oxford Mail competition to take on The Power.

He lost, but was thrilled to get the chance to play his hero.

“I played darts a bit, and didn't play too badly against him, but the whole thing was just out of this world,” he said.

“How often do you get the chance to take on your hero or a world champion.

“Going on first meant I was very nervous, but it was just the best evening of my life.”

Taylor was impressed by the set-up at the Between Towns Road club, better known for snooker and pool.

“Look at it,” he said. “How many places give you a darts area like this?

“The sport has become young and trendy again and we need places like this to help it continue to be that way.

“I really enjoy these nights, it's a break from my normal routine and a great chance to meet the public and have some fun and games with them.

“Rileys are doing a great job throughout the country, and I just hope people make the most of the facilities.”
