Berinsfield starlet Jordan Flynn begins his National Schoolboy Championships campaign at his home gym next Saturday.
For the 13-year-old, it is the start of a quest to add a second title to the one he lifted in 2009.
Flynn became Berinsfield’s first winner of a schoolboy crown last March when he captured the Class 1 (under 13 years) 42kg championship.
Twelve months on, the youngster has added an inch or two and four kilograms (nine pounds) to his frame, and he starts this campaign in the Class 2 (under 14 years) 46kg category.
Berinsfield coach Mel Corrigan was quick to point out that no title bid mirrors what has occured in the past.
He said: “Some kids develop at a different rate to others – especially at that age – and it’s unlikely that Jordan will meet any of the opponents he faced last year.”
Liam Joseph, who takes part in the Class 3 (under 16 years) 54 kg (bantamweight) division, is the other Berinsfield entrant.
The Oxford Boxing Academy also have two contenders in this year’s competition – brothers Bradley and Declan Townsend.
Bradley, the elder of the pair, is in action in the Class 3 52 kg category and Declan fights in the Class 2 50 kg section.
Five other Berinsfield youngsters are in action in the support bouts – light flyweights Mark McDonagh and Ciaran Flanagan, flyweight duo Jordan Reilly and Thomas Baldwin, and 16-year-old middleweight Brendan Gormant.
The first bell at the Fane Drive venue is set for 1.30 pm and admission is £10 for adults, with concessions available.
