Two scintillating tries from wing John Barrett helped Grove bounce back from their first defeat with an 18-6 victory over Aylesbury in Southern Counties North.

Grove fly half Roger Sevier and Aylesbury full back Gary Horne traded two penalties apiece, while home centre Dave Maryon had to go off with a broken nose.

The game continued in fractured style and Horne was sin-binned for punching.

Barrett went close for Grove, while Aylesbury hooker Graham Sale also threatened.

After the break, Grove’s best move so far saw Barrett finish a fine team try, Roger Sevier converting.

Flanker James Kerr’s line-out steal started the move for Barrett’s second try, which put Grove 18-6 ahead.

Barrett came close to a hat-trick, but Grove still had to defend well.

Chipping Norton returned to winning ways in the league with a 15-8 victory over Beaconsfield.

Chippy began brightly, but did not gain the breakthrough until the half-hour when Jamie Lakin changed the direction of play and Stephen Wawrzyniak finished out wide.

Adam Smith just missed the conversion, but added penalty to put Chippy 8-0 up at half-time.

Beaconsfield hit back with a penalty, but Chippy’s patience paid off when Tom Eaton put Smith in under the posts and the latter converted.

The visitors managed a try and the hosts had to defend desperately.

Bicester could not convert first-half pressure into points as they lost 33-17 at home to Swindon.

Skipper Dan Spencer was yellow-carded for an attempted punch, but his side still took the lead with a penalty from scrum half Steve Risbridger.

Risbridger went close and Bicester were help as they dove for the line.

Swindon hooker Scott Chapman scored the opening try on 34 minutes, with wing Mark Chatwin converting.

The visitors led 21-3 soon after the break as Chapman struck again and Chatwin added a try and two conversions.

Prop James Davies pulled a try back for Bicester, Risbridger converting, but Swindon wing Rhys Thomas ran in an interception score.

Chatwin’s conversion and try No 5 from prop Nick Brookes made it 33-10.

Full back Chad Ward grabbed a consolation score for Bicester, Risbridger converting.

Leaders Witney romped to a 49-7 victory at Slough.
