Abingdon United took the honours in last night’s Zamaretto Southern League Division 1 South & West local derby by seeing off Oxfordshire rivals North Leigh 3-1 at Northcourt Road.
Andy Slater’s side looked sharp from the off and went ahead on 13 minutes when James Faulkner netted after his first shot had been blocked by North Leigh keeper Sam Worrell.
In the 25th minute, Abingdon increased their advantage, John Mills netting from five yards to give his side a 2-0 lead which they held until the break.
North Leigh came out char-ged up for the second half and took the game by the scruff of the neck.
Within three minutes of the restart, Ben Reardon had reduced the arrears with a cracking goal after the home defence had been carved open.
United were forced to dig deep, but grabbed the all-important next goal on 63 minutes.
Tom Franklin’s shot was parried by Worrall and dropped to Billy Beechers, who threaded his shot into the corner.
As tempers became frayed in the closing stages, North Leigh’s Matty Taylor was sent off for kicking out at Mills.
