Barry Brennan is still on cloud nine after Nawow gave him his first winner from his new stables at King-ston Lisle, near Wantage, with victory at Stratford – before doubling his tally a day later with Daraz Rose at Uttoxeter.

Brennan, 41, who took out a licence to train at stables on the Lonsdale Estate in the spring, got off the mark when the nine-year-old gelding, owned by TV racing presenter Luke Harvey, who also lives in the village, took the Moreton-In-Marsh Handicap Chase over two miles, one and a half furlongs.

Peter Toole gave the nine-year-old gelding a fine ride, producing him at the last fence before holding off Star Galaxy by two lengths.

Brennan, a former assistant to Alan King, has set up at Kingston Lisle with a team of around 12 horses with the backing of Barry Hurley, whose company, Seasons Holidays, sponsor the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

“He has given us the opportunity to train at Kingston Lisle and that is my first winner,” said Brennan after welcoming Nawow into the winner’s enclosure. “We are over the moon.

“He is a lovely, genuine consistent horse and an absolute pleasure to have.”

A nephew of retired trainer Owen Brennan, he was previously based at Hurley’s Sandy Lane Stud, near Calne in Wiltshire, where he foaled the classy filly Clow-ance.

Nawow could now bid to follow up at either Hereford or Ffos Las on Sunday.

Brennan notched win No 2 when Daraz Rose scored at Uttoxeter 24 hours later.

Noel Fehily was in the saddle this time as the eight-year-old, owned by Lyn Robins, from Chipping Norton, romped home by four and a half lengths from Ambrose Princess in a mares’ handicap hurdle.

Brennan added: “We are delighted by it. I think we are still on cloud nine, although we had another runner (Pont d’Avignon) who got a little bit injured, but that is part of racing.

“It is just great for a little yard with only a dozen horses and only three or four to go jumping.”
