Henley Hawks recorded their first shut-out of the National 2 South season in a 28-0 defeat of Dings Crusaders – but could not secure a bonus point.

Young fly half Will Fulton stepped through the Dings’ defence to open the scoring with a fourth-minute try, which he converted.

Fulton added two penalties, the second of which followed a yellow card to former Hawks centre Sam Caven.

Full back Ralph Smith and wing Pete Davies were both recalled for disputable forward passes from the influential Fulton.

But Henley ended the half 20-0 ahead when No 8 Matt Payne seized on a poor line-out throw and strolled over for Fulton to convert.

Scrum half James Gaunt pounced on a loose ball to run in Henley’s third try on 44 minutes, with Fulton adding a penalty six minutes later.

Hawks suffered injuries to flanker Alex Dupee and prop Rowan Fuller as they lost momentum.

Yellow cards to replacement prop Alex Penny and flanker Jack Hennings did not help the hosts’ cause.

Henley head coach Jason Forster said: “I was very pleased at the way the boys defended so well for a long period.”
