Football fans in Oxfordshire can enjoy an FA Cup double after Oxford City’s first-round trip to Burton Albion was switched to Sunday, November 8, with a 3pm kick-off.
It means fans can watch the Oxford United v Yeovil Town game on the Saturday, before heading to Staffordshire the next day.
The Burton match has been moved as the Coca-Cola League Two outfit are staging a seminar on the Saturday.
A statement from Burton chairman Ben Robinson said: “The all-day seminar has been arranged for some time, the date of which could not be changed.
“Burton Albion are extremely grateful to Oxford City for agreeing to the game to be played on the Sunday.
“Previous Sunday matches have been well supported, and the recent Rochdale game played on a Sunday saw our second-highest league attendance this season.”
City secretary John Shepperd said they had readily agreed to the switch.
“The games have created a lot of local interest and it gives fans a chance to see the United v Yeovil game and our game on the Sunday,” he said.
City boss Mike Ford, who captained and managed the U’s, added: “It would be much appreciated if any of the Oxford United fans wanted to come to the game, because there are a lot of Oxford United connections at City.
“It would be good to get a couple of hundred fans supporting us.”
Ford’s side will be looking for a repeat of the clubs’ last meeting in 1978 when City won 1-0 in the FA Cup preliminary round, Bob Green the scorer.
Meanwhile, Brewers boss Paul Peschisolido said he was not taking a win for granted: “I love the FA Cup, but it is all about upsets and we’ve absolutely got to be wary of that. You can’t underestimate anyone.
“In the past, Burton Albion have been on the other side of giant-killings and we have seen what can happen in this lovely FA Cup.
“A team like Oxford will get themselves up for a trip to the Pirelli Stadium.”
