Jolly Poacher gave the large crowd something to roar about when Sandy Lane’s best prospect for years re-wrote the record books at Oxford Stadium in romping to a unique treble in breathtaking style.
The brindle and white dog made it six wins on the trot, all in openraces.
And while other hounds will have achieved that, Poacherwon the three big local races here with consummate ease, with his owners Shane Lee and Mel Shorter pocketing a handsome £5,000.
He is the first hound to win all three in the same year and the fastest ever to have won Saturday's race.
Sadly, it came just too late to be included in Gary Baiden's book The History of Oxford Stadium.
Poacher was beaten out of the traps for the first time by Pall Mall and Peterborough Derby finalist Farley Legend, but his early pace took him to the bend first.
Huggingthe rails, he soon saw off Farley Legend and kicked on down the backstraight.
Brickfield Class, a winner of nine open races here, was looking dangerous, but Poacher turned on the gas coming into the home straight and was rewarded with a great roar as he came home two and a quarter lengths clear, posting 26.53.
Poacher created another record by breaking the 27.00 barrier in every run.
The big question now is how will Poacher perform on another track?
He trialled at Wimbledon on Thursday with a view to entering a race on St Leger finals night, covered by Sky TV, on Tuesday.
Wycombe trainer Yeates said: “We will see how he goes in the trial before making up our minds.
“It's up to the owners, but I would think, while the weather holds, he would have another two or three runs before resting up for the winter. The Pall Mall next March may well be an option.
“I don't think he will be a one-track dog, he finished Saturday's race as fresh a daisy."
The all-trophy meeting also proved fruitful for Paddy Curtin, who produced a four-timer with Farloe Macho, Killishin Hondo, Farloe Ellie and Solid Kuyt. Michael Pet-erson chipped with a treble.
BOOKMAKER Stan James has renewed his traps’ sponsorship for the another 12 months.
