Former Wantage trainer David Gandolfo has announced his retirement after a career spanning 50 years.
The 71-year-old sent out around 1,500 winners, including a string of big-race successes during his 40 years training at Downs Stables, before moving to Somerset two years ago.
He sold his Wantage yard for development and set up a new base after purchasing Footsteps stables at Charlton Adam from fellow trainer Ron Hodges.
Now Gandolfo is to rent out the yard to Liam Corcoran, who has been his assistant for the last six months.
He said: “I have gradually been winding down and it’s time to pass on the baton.”
His big-race winners included Grey Sombrero (Whitbread and Midlands National), Peter Scot (Welsh National), Henry Kissinger (Mackeson Chase) and Trying Again (Lanzarote Hurdle).
