John Brodley believes Oxford Harlequins are developing a squad capable of shining in National 3 South West.
Last season, Quins often struggled to put out a competitive side and won just six league matches, but director of rugby Brodley is more than happy this time around.
He said: “The squad system we are trying to create is really working.
“We don’t believe in a first team. We really have 26 players who can come in and do well.
“We know we’ll have injuries and a bit of unavailability and we train as a squad to deal with that.
“Behind the scenes a lot of good work is being done by Tony Edney and John Gunter, as well as on the field by Andy Boyle and Martin Nutt.”
As often happens, Quins have benefitted from players simply moving to Oxford, particularly from overseas.
Australian Jason Welburn, who made his debut at No 8 against Cleve on Saturday, is a case in point.
But Brodley stresses Quins are not relying on such players.
He said: “I think I am coming to terms with the fact that this is a cosmopolitan city and we are able to cope with some players only being around for a month or two.
“If they are good enough, they play.
“We can use these players as a bonus to a strong squad.”
One reason for such optimism is the progression of players from the Leadbitter Oxford Academy with Ollie Rees, Mario Da Silva and Graham Crapper all appearing this season.
Brodley said: “I was really pleased with young Graham Crapper at full back on Saturday. I thought in the first half he was particularly commanding.
“Once other players come back, he will give me selection difficulties.
“That shows we are on the right lines for the future.”
One thing Quins have not quite achieved is better home support, with Saturday witnessing another relatively low turnout.
Brodley, though, believes, this will come with success.
He said: “If people think we are going to win, the support will come. It’s as simple as that.”
