Simon Clist pounced with an 81st-minute equaliser, just ten minutes after York had taken the lead, to bring Oxford United a very useful point in a 1-1 draw at KitKat Crescent.
The Blue Square Premier leaders had to withstand heavy pressure for most of the game, and when Michael Rankine fired the Minstermen in front with 19 minutes remaining, a second defeat of the season looked on the cards.
But Clist finished off a great run by turning in sub Jack Midson's right-wing cross to make it all square.
The point keeps United seven points clear at the top, and they have reached the 40-point mark already.
But it came at a cost with both strikers Matt Green and James Constable picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season, ruling them out of next Saturday's FA Cup tie against Thurrock.
