Two Matt Flegg tries helped Alchester go top of the BB&O Premier Division with a 34-5 victory over Gosford All Blacks.

Gosford dominated early on, but could not breach a resolute defence.

Alchester led 7-0 after referee Keith Latham awarded a penalty try, which fly half Ali Smith converted.

Gosford, who were without several key players, hit back early in the second half when fly half Harry Sutton and centre Dan Thiele set up replacement wing Tim Ellis to score.

Jack Briggs fed his centre partner Flegg for Alchester’s second try, converted by Smith.

The game was delayed for half an hour after Gosford centre Ed Ronan suffered concussion, but he was released from hospital that night.

Smith made it 17-5 with a penalty, then Flegg touched down his second, although Gosford felt the ball was not properly grounded.

Alchester completed victory with tries from wing Andy Blacklock, converted by Smith, and lock Andy Harbottle.

Oxford made hard work of their 18-14 victory at home to Phoenix.

Phoenix led 8-0, but Oxford hit back with a try from prop Frank Long, converted by Stuart Waknell, who also kicked a penalty.

Phoenix slotted two penalties, while Waknell missed two simple three-pointers before kicking a third.

Phil Longuet-Higgins’s grubber set up Owen Gustafson’s winning try.

Harwell saw their home clash with Stow-on-the-Wold abandoned after 47 minutes following an injury to referee Geoff Fitzgerald.

They were trailing 17-8 at the time, but the match will now be replayed.

Didcot lost 53-19 at Newbury 4th in BB&O Division 2 South, Doug Gayley, Barry Llewellyn and Sam Lacy scoring their tries and Paul Costello converting two.
