Oxford Hawks Ladies got their South Clubs League Division 1 campaign off to a flying start with a 3-1 win over Harrow at Banbury Road North.

Kathryn Poulter got the first goal following a great move.

The second score followed moments later, when Fi Walton capitalised on a Harrow defensive error, The killer third goal came on the stroke of half time when Kara Kerr crashed the ball into the area and Kelly Fogden deftly touched it home.

With the Hawks players feeling the heat, Harrow scored a consolation goal, but it was too little too late as the home side held on.

Rover Oxford were handed a lesson ín their first match in this league, following their relegation from the Slazenger England League, going down 6-0 to Surbiton.

Surbiton’s quick forwards were able to find gaps and struck twice before half-time.

In the second half, Rover came back fighting, allowing their forward line of Hayley Sawyer, Emily Court and Sam Sandham to create chances, but they were unable to convert.

Tired legs and minds allowed Surbiton to finish convincing winners.

In Division 3A, City of Oxford began with a 2-1 victory over Teddington.

Anna Nicholson and Christine Fraser put City two up at half-time before the visitors pulled one back.

Banbury beat Staines 2-0 and after letting in the most goals last season, they were delighted with a clean sheet.

The impressive Olivia Matt-hews and Ali Sturla combined for last season’s top scorer, Natasha Nunneley, to open the scoring.

Banbury settled it when they were awarded a penalty flick as Nunneley grabbed her and Banbury’s second.

Their defence, in particular Jo Hopkins, making her home debut, thwarted all that Sta-ines could throw at them.

West Witney notched an impressive 3-2 win at Sonning.

Witney went 2-0 up with two great short-corner strikes from Katie Gatt.

Sonning drew level early in the second half before Lucy Reading slotted home the winning goal with ten minutes left.
