Oxford RFC’s centenary celebrations gather pace on Friday with a celebration dinner at St Edmund Hall.

Former internationals Ollie Waldron (Ireland) and Geoff Windsor-Lewis (Wales) are the main speakers at what the club hope will be a memorable event.

Waldron, who also played for Oxford University, will propose the health of the club, former Oxford man and current Barbarians secretary Windsor-Lewis will reply.

The year has also seen the launch of Oxford Centenary Wines.

Oxford’s first match on October 2, 1909 was against St Edward’s School, which they won 24-3.

To mark that milestone the Oxford Rugby Partnership Academy will take on the school under floodlights at the Southern Bypass ground on Tuesday, October 6.

Other events set for the season include a Turkey Trot golf tournament at Frilford Heath in December, a beer festival and ten-a-side competition and summer ball.

On the field, Oxford have reverted to their traditional green, white and black striped shirts – the colours they began playing in.

They would love to mark the season by securing promotion from the BB&O Premier Division – and they made a good start with a 50-12 victory over Harwell in their opening fixture.

They also hope to restart their second team, which ceased playing league rugby in the 2006/07 season as former players get in touch to celebrate the anniversary.
