City of Oxford retained the Oxfordshire Women's Cup with a strong defensive display at the tournament, hosted by Oxford Hawks, on Sunday.

City were the epitome of consistency, not conceding a single goal in the competition and winning three of their 20-minutes-a-half matches 1-0.

Orgainised defending and very good goalkeeping provided the platform for their victories.

Banbury and West Witney shared the spoils in an evenly matched first game, which ended 1-1, with Olivia Matthews scoring Banbury’s goal following a flowing attacking move.

In the second game, City beat Rover Oxford 1-0, with a topped short corner tapped home by Rachel Lammey giving them the winner.

Despite Hawks dominating for periods of play against Banbury, they were kept out bhy a strong goalkeeping display in a goalless draw.

Banbury gave first-team debuts in the competition to Beth Camp, Charlie Moran, Charlotte Drummond and Rebecca Atkins.

West Witney and City then drew 0-0 in a very tight encounter s.

Hawks dominated procedings when they faced Rover, running out 3-0 winners with a brace from youngster Beth Warne, and a goal from Marie Warwick.

Next up, City defeated Banbury 1-0 thanks to a goal from Lisa Scragg.

This put them ahead on points in the tournament.

In Banbury’s final match, Tash Nunneley ran through the Rover Oxford defence to earn them a 1-0 win after it had looked like ending in stalemate.

West Witney defeated Oxford Hawks 1-0 through a Sadie Lapper strike.

Going into the penultimate game between City of Oxford and Hawks, any one of City, Hawks or Witney could have come out as champions.

However, City emerged on top 1-0 against Hawks in another tight encounter with Kirsty Brammer getting the all-important goal.

Hosts Hawks had been made to pay for scoring in only one of their matches.

City of Oxford were unbeaten on the day, and they retained the trophy.
