Kelvin Thomas is resigned to the fact that there will inevitably be speculation linking Chris Wilder with vacancies at other clubs while Oxford are doing well.
League Two frontrunners Rotherham were thought to be eyeing Wilder after Mark Robins left Millmoor to become boss at Barnsley.
Thomas told the Oxford Mail: “With Oxford doing well, he’s going to be linked to every job going, we have to accept that.
“But in all honesty, he’s tied in to a three-year contract here so we’ve got the security of that, and we would get considerable compensation if he did go.
“But at this point I don’t believe there is a club he would be willing to leave Oxford for.
“Most of this Rotherham speculation was internet-led, not from any official sources.”
A lot stemmed from the fact that Wilder used to play for Rotherham.
The club closest to his heart, after Oxford at this moment, is Sheffield United. But they are unlikely to consider a manager unless he’s achieved success at League Two level at the very least.
Wilder told me last week: “Nobody can do anything about it (the speculation).
“What do I say? Do I say I’m flattered by people’s interest? You’ve just got to get your head down and work at the job you’re doing.
“I can’t affect whatever goes on elsewhere. I’m just trying to do the job of preparing the players and winning games, and if they’re happy, and my employers are happy, that’s good.”
It was probably a non-starter anyway, with Ronnie Moore, who parted company with Tranmere in the summer, tipped to return for a second stint as Rotherham boss.
Chairman Tony Stewart said: "We do not expect applications to come from people currently employed.”
