Seventeen-year-old Alex Jones, from Witney, has been selected to compete in the 1500m for his club Enfield & Haringey at the European Clubs Cup Championship in Moscow this weekend.
Jones will be part of the under 20 men’s squad from Enfield, which will be representing Great Britain at this major championship.
The final will be held at the Olympic Stadium in the Russian capital, where Jones’s club will be competing against the other top under 20 men’s teams and clubs from across Europe The youngster has made big strides in recent seasons.
Last year, he was offered a place at the Oaklands Athletics Academy in St Albans.
Living away from home, the academy offers aspiring athletes the chance to study for qualifications equivalent to A levels alongside a training programme.
His 2009 track season has seen the benefit of this, achieving county silver in the 800m and bronze in the 1500m, and has recorded personal bests in 800m, 1500m and 3,000m this season.
