Oxford Cavaliers, the city’s rugby league club, are looking to raise their profile in the build-up to the 2013 World Cup in England.
Cavaliers are setting up an academy for 16-18-year-olds and seeking to promote their matches across the city.
Club captain John Connaughton said: “With the World Cup being held in 2013, there is a huge incentive for us to set up our academy side.
“The young lads who attend the trial dates that we are hoping to announce soon will have a major goal to work towards.
“As by the time the World Cup comes around they could be at the age where they are in with a chance of representing their country.”
Cavaliers’ next match is against Brookes Bulls, the Oxford Brookes University team, at Stratfield Brake, Kidlington on Saturday, October 3.
Both clubs are urging families to spend a small part of their weekend supporting both clubs.
“We are hoping to work with the local secondary schools and colleges to give children a chance to take up something new outside of their school life,” added Connaughton.
