City of Oxford’s Ben Chapman braved the cold sea to win the junior and open men’s titles in the 1500m South East Region Open Water Championships at Southsea.
The 15-year-old took the lead at the first buoy and increased this in a sprint finish to take both titles.
Witney finished third in the opening gala of their 2009-10 season at Windrush Leisure Centre.
The 15 & under boys were in sparkling form, remaining undefeated following excellent displays from Philip Bennett, Adam Collinge, Harry Hall, Nathan Harkin, Elliot Jozwin, Jack Kendal, Calum McLean and Connor Taylor.
The girls 11 & under breakstroke group won, with encouraging swims from Imogen Pitson, Skye Tanner, Ellie Nutt and Phoebe Moss.
Result: 1 Maxwell 165pts, 2 Ruislip/Northwood 156, 3 Witney 129, 4 Aylesbury 103, 5 Henley 40.
