Tuesday night was the eighth 10,000-plus gate United have played in front of at the Kassam Stadium.
The 10,613 attendance was the biggest for a Conference match (in regular season) since Boxing Day 2006 when 11,065 watched Oxford’s 0-0 draw with Woking.
The play-off semi-final against Exeter the following May drew 10,691.
The atmosphere on Tuesday reminded many supporters of the glory days in the 80s when the Manor was rocking during those famous midweek cup wins over Newcastle, Leeds, Man Utd, Arsenal, Portsmouth and Aston Villa.
“I know the supporters are really proud of what the players have achieved, and the feel-good factor it gave everyone, so it was one to enjoy,” said manager Chris Wilder.
“The whole mentality of the club, and the staff in every department of it, is to keep working hard.
“And the chairman’s reiterated that.
People behind the scenes, in the ticket office and elsewhere, worked very hard in making the game a very big one, and the players managed to produce a performance.”
It’s easy to forget how few 10,000-plus gates Oxford United have played in front of in recent years, because the ground capacity for the last few seasons at the Manor was cut to below this.
So the last five-figure crowd at the Manor was back in April 1994 when 10,423 saw a 4-0 win over Wolves.
