Oxfordshire's ladies produced their best County Week performance for years to finish second in the Midlands South Group at Ladbroke Park, near Solihull.

The draw did not favour Oxon, who were comprehensively beaten by group winners and host Warwickshire on day one, but they bounced back well.

Victories over Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire & Herfordshire and a draw with Berkshire saw Oxon finish clear in second.

Oxon only picked up 1½ points against Warwicks courtesy of a singles victory for Lauren Jupp (Studley Wood) and a half from Samantha Round (Cotswold Hills) and Justine Voss (Henley) in the morning foursomes.

However, on day two, they lost only two matches in a 6½-2½ thrashing of Bucks, with Jupp, who claimed 3½ points from her five singles in the week, again successful.

There were foursomes victories for Jane Binning (Frilford) and Katherine O’Connor (Tadmarton), Round and Tilly Holder (Woburn), plus Jupp (Studley) and Annie Gowing (Frilford).

Laura Watkins (Bicester) halved her singles, with O’Connor and Holder also successful.

Oxon won all three of their foursomes matches against Northants, thanks to O’Connor and Jupp, Round and Holder, and Binning and Voss.

O’Connor, Binning and Voss halved their singles to clinch Oxon’s victory.

An 8-1 thumping of Worcestershire & Herefordshire followed on day four, with the same three foursomes pairings victorious.

Oxfordshire clinched the afternoon singles 5-1, with Gemma Clements (Studley Wood) winning on her county debut.

Watkins secured Oxon’s draw with Berks by halving the final singles match on the final hole.

Oxfordshire captain Jayne Laurie (Chipping Norton) said: “This is the first time Oxfordshire have finished so well for a number of years.

“Credit must be given to the whole team for their determination, never giving up at any stage in a match, and their fabulous golf.”
