Wesley Morrick’s second successive five-wicket haul proved in vain as Aston Rowant crashed to a 79-run defeat at Basingstoke & North Hants in Division 2 West.

Morrick’s efforts looked to have put Rowant in a winning position at lunch with the hosts 114-8 after being put in.

But Basingstoke came out fighting after the break to post 176 all out, with Mathew Thankachan hitting an unbeaten 53.

Morrick, who blew Thame Town away with 5-25 the previous week, finished with 5-86.

Australian Tim Miles (3-45) provided good support.

Rowant’s reply started poorly with Miles and Tim Morgan perishing to leave them 28-2.

Alex Jewell looked in good nick, but was controversially adjudged lbw to Gavin Tonge when he had made 37.

Tonge (6-55) and Martyn James (4-37) then raced through the rest of the order as Rowant collapsed to 97 all out.
