The first round of the new Oxford Summer League was held on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Bedwyn on Sunday.
Without significant rain, it fished very well, although the big fish were still absent.
Usually, skimmers make up the winning weights, but it was small roach which were prominent and on one ten-peg section, 6lb was only enough for last place while on another, 9lb was 'good enough' for sixth.
Last season's individual champion Paul Passmore (Turners Tackle & Bait) resumed where he left off by winning with 18.4.0.
That comprised 10lb of skimmers on pieces of worm over chop at 13m, and 8lb of bits on pinkie/squatt over groundbait on the whip.
Micky 'The Bleak' Elliott (Oxford Drennan) was second 17.2.0 of roach and bits on a 3m whip and squatt.
He was followed by Des Shipp (Daiwa Dorking) with 14.12.0 of roach on long pole and whip using squatt over groundbait.
The average weight per man over the whole match was 8.5 lb.
Top 5 Teams on the day: Oxford Drennan 49pts, Daiwa Dorking 47, Shakespeare 40, Turners Tackle & Bait 36, Garbolino Banbury Gunsmiths 35.
Next round: June 28, River Thames at Medley-Folly-Donnington.
In-form Andy Benwell won the latest round of the Carp League 2009 at Ridgeway, where 20 fished.
The Predator ace returned a magnificent 176.5.0, comprising 50 carp on paste.
In second spot was Robin Guppy (RS Baits) with 106.6.0 of carp on banded pellet, while Paul Dann was third with 96.13.0, again all carp, also on banded pellet.
In total, 1,610lb of fish were caught.
Beehive fished their Cup Winners Cup at a sun-drenched Panshill and had a cracking match with more than 650lb hitting the scales from the 18 matchmen.
Kevin Jeacock fished paste at eight metres to triumph with 83.5.0, ahead of Martin Wilkinson with a second-placed 65.1.0, on pole and pellet, and Nick Collier with 62.12.0.
Vernon Adams claimed the first silverware of the new season at Littlemore AS with a convincing win in the J Henwood Shield at Sunningwell Lake.
Fishing the pole at 7m over some lily pads, he had three good tench alternating between maggot and worm for 12.14.0.
Brian Hutchings was second with a solitary tench and a few rudd for 4.4.0.
Ken Franklin took third place with a 3.12.0 tench on the worm.
l THE first of the new Open evening matches on Pans Lake was won by Barry Eddy with 80.0.0 (see other results).
Matches are drawn at 5.30, with fishing 6-9pm on alternate lakes – Pans Lake one week and Wood Lake the next.
