Oxfordshire motorcycling sensation Bradley Smith returns to Barcelona – where his Grand Prix career really took off as he looks for his third victory of the season in this weekend’s Catalan MotoGP.
Smith, 18, is also looking to extend his lead at the top of the 125cc championship table from his Aspar Asprila teammate Julián Simón whom he leads by three and a half points.
Simón will want revenge over the Briton after missing out on victory in his last home race at Jerez – the scene of Smith’s first grand prix victory – so an intriguing clash is expected.
Sergio Gadea could also have a big say as the Spaniard looks to make up for a disappointing race in Italy last time out.
“Being leader of the championship is an incredible feeling,” Smith said.
“We've had five fantastic races and things are going really well for us.
“The Aprilia is working perfectly and that makes my feeling with the bike better every time I ride it.
“In Barcelona, we'll have another opportunity to do well.
“I’m really looking forward to the weekend because Barc-elona has great sentimental value for me because I had my very first ride on a Grand Prix bike there.
“I suppose if we do that then there's no reason to think that we can't stay on top of the championship.
“Montmeló is the first circuit I rode at outside of England and it holds special memories for me.”
He added: “Leading the world championship standings is definitely a big positive for me.
“I’m just hoping my form can continue.
“The results have started to come and with two wins to my name it’s been a great start to the season.
“Last year I was always the rider that was there, but never quite made the top step.”
