Abingdon-based racer John Williams is embarking on the biggest season of his career as he competes in the Michelin Ginetta G50 Cup for the first time.

Williams, 25, has tested and raced various cars, both single-seaters and sports cars, but for the 2009 season, will compete for Colards Motorsport Team.

The G50 Cup is part of the TOCA package, which also includes the Porsche Carerra Cup, Formula Renault UK Championship, Renault Clio Cup and the world-famous British Touring Car Championships.

All these classes come together to race over a weekend, creating a carnival of racing at each weekend throughout the summer.

And TOCA’s festival-style weekends bring media exposure surpassed only by Formula 1.

Williams is now on the look-out for new sponsors to help him fulfil his ambition of driving in the championship.

He said: “This is my first season in this class.

“I started karting when I was a kid, but last year was the first time I had any kind of decent budget, and was able to do a full year’s testing and racing.

“This will be my first crack at a national championship, but in order to compete and be competitive, I’m in need of some sponsorship.

“There are thousands of spectators in this sport, it’s huge in this country, particularly with television exposure as well.

“I’m fulfilling a dream to compete on a championship, and I’m hoping for some top-five finishes.”
