A host of records were broken at the South Oxfordshire Schools’ Area Athletics Championships at Tilsley Park, Abingdon.

Wheatley Park’s Luca Headford led the way in the boys’ competition by lowering the under 13 200m record with a time of 26.44secs in the heats, before going on to win the final.

James Purcell-Lacey, of Chiltern Edge, broke the under 15 800m record with 2mins 14secs, while his schoolmate Jack Biddle improved the mark for the long jump with 5.25m.

The field events saw another record with Ollie Taylor (Langtree, Woodcote) clearing 1.75m in the under 17 high jump.

Records also fell in the girls’ competition with Wallingford’s Amy Brooker running 2.30.00 in the under 17 800m, while Jemma Gregory leapt 4.73m in the long jump.

The relays produced a brace of records with Didcot Girls storming home at under 13, while Icknield (Watlington) took the honours in the under 15 boys’ race.

Gillott’s (Henley) emerged as the overall winners of the nine competing schools, having triumphed in five of the six age groups, with Cranford House winning the under 15 girls’ section.

The leading South athletes will be going for more glory at the Oxfordshire Schools’ Track & Field Championships back at Tilsley Park on Sunday (10am).
