Headington are through to the national finals of schools’ tennis’s top under 19 team tournament for the first time in their history.
The team of captain Hannah Pennicott, Georgina Carr, Pip Rowe and Cara Gainer booked their place in the last 16 of the Aberdare Cup at Queenswood in Hertfordshire from July 6-10 with a 10-2 victory over Marlborough College in the regional decider.
Headington had beaten local rivals Oxford High School 10-3 in the first round, before whitewashing Royal Masonic School 12-0 and then defeating Wycombe Abbey A 8-4.
Matches consist of four singles and two doubles rubbers, with each rubber the best of three sets – the third being a match tie-break.
Headington’s march to the national finals of the competition, which attracted 240 entries, is even more impressive as Gainer (year 9) and Rowe (year 10) are much younger than the age limit.
