West Ilsley trainer Mick Channon believes Montaff is capable of surprising a few people in the Investec Derby at Epsom on Saturday.

The son of Montjeu is a 50-1 outsider for Flat racing’s blue riband.

But Channon knows what it takes to mix it with the best, having produced Youmazin, who goes for today’s Coronation Stakes, to compete with distinction at the highest level.

He said: “I couldn't run Youmzain in the Derby, but truthfully most of mine wouldn't get a mile and a half on a bus.

“With this horse, all he's done is improve.

“He was a decent two-year-old, but then in late February he threw a splint. It held us up, but it might just end up being a blessing, as I couldn't have him better.

“I'll eat my hat if he doesn't surprise a few people in the Derby.”

Winner of a mile maiden on testing ground at Newcastle in October, Montaff showed improved form under Darryll Holland on his seasonal debut when beaten a neck by Age Of Aquarius in the Lingfield Derby Trial.

With Holland suspended, Richard Hills comes in for the ride, and he believes the Barry Walters-owned three-year-old, who worked at Epsom's 'Breakfast With The Stars' gathering last Thursday, could be a Derby dark horse.

Hills said: “He's a very calm horse and went very well round there.

“He gave me a good feel and quickened rounding the turn.

“I was very pleased. He seems to take everything in his stride.

“He could be a dark horse in the race.

“I've had a couple of seconds and a third and a fourth in the race.

“Let's hope this is the one who breaks my Derby duck.”
