Oxford City boosted their bid for promotion to the Premier Division of the National Young Athletes League with victory in their Southern 1 West meeting at Tilsley Park.

City finished 38 points clear of host club Radley to cement their good start to the season.

The middle distance runners led the way, with George Henry and Krishan Parameswaran recording A and B string victories in the under 13 800m with times of 2.36.4 and 2.41.3 respectively.

Josh Tack and Matthieu Marshall destroyed the opposition in the under 15 1500m, clocking 4.47.5 and 4.54.5 in the A and B string races, while James Cody picked up valuable points in the 800m, 1500m and 1500m steeplechase.

Tristan Smith, Harry Robertson and Sam Kelly managed a clutch of firsts and seconds in the under 17 boys’ 800m, 1500m, 1500m steeplechase and 3000m.

City’s sprinters had more mixed results against the strong teams of Isle of Wight and Radley.

Matthew Gain was second behind Radley’s Jordan Dorrian in the under 15 A string 100m. Dorrian clocked 12.4 secs and Gain 12.6 secs.

Ollie Wingfield won the B string race in 12.80.

There were excellent performances in the under 17 competition.

Marcus Woodington was second in the 100m hurdles in 14.7 and he also won the javelin with 31.72m.

City led local rivals Radley by a clear margin, and the relay teams left no room for doubt with second places for the under 13 and under 15 4x100m teams, first place for the under 15 4x400m team and second for the under 17 4x400m team.

City’s girls also produced a strong showing with A string wins in the under 17 girls’ 100 and 200m by Rebecca Hussey in 12.7 and 26.0 secs respectively.

Melissa Hawtin won the 1500m in 4.52.0, while Danielle Anderson triumphed in the A string shot and javelin with throws of 7.07 and 38.55m.

Although Radley came second, there were many good displays.

The club’s athlete-of-the-match, under 15 Kim Sutherland, clocked 27.1 secs in the 200m, while Adam Breslin took the boys’ award for fine showings in hammer, shot and 1500m.

Other outstanding performances came from Dorrian, who recorded a personal best of 24.4 in the 200m and also won the long with a fine leap of 5.13m.

Under 17 girl Louise Brown ran 12.5 in the 80m hurdles, while under 13 Megan Humphreys ran a personal best of 2.29.4 in the 800m.
